Ram Gopal Varma on why Vivek Oberoi lost his 'aggressive edge' amid Salman Khan feud: 'If he's stuck too close to 'the company'...

Ram Gopal Varma says there are no “camps” in Bollywood, it is pure self-interest. He advised Vivek to stick to intense ‘corporate’ style roles like young Nana Patekar, and not romantic/comedy ones. The controversy arose from Aishwarya Rai’s row in 2003; Vivek claimed that Salman’s threats faced a boycott despite the strikes.

Director Ram Gopal Varma with his impressive filmography has fundamentally shifted the focus on how stories are brought to life on screen with films like ‘Satya’, ‘Company’, ‘Shiva’, ‘Sarkar’, ‘Rangeela’, ‘Kaun’ and ‘Bhoot’.

He also helped new directors like Sriram Raghavan, Anurag Kashyap and Shimit Amin enter the world of cinema. In a recent interview, RGV was asked if Salman Khan ruined Vivek Oberoi’s career, and he shared his thoughts on Vivek’s trajectory.

Ram Gopal Varma talks about the ‘camps’ in Bollywood and Vivek Oberoi’s fight with Salman Khan

While appearing on Vicky Lalwani’s podcast, when asked about camps in Bollywood, RJV said: “I don’t think so at all. There will be individuals, no camps. Everyone is just for themselves. That’s the way it should be.”

This is human nature. I want to be the most successful, is what. Then in the group, you may have someone because you need a social group, the friends that you have and continue to meet and talk and discuss.

It will be seen as camp. Jealousy is also inherent in human nature. As if someone else were more successful, no human being could afford that. Instead of looking at it with disdain, you should accept it as nature within you.

The director further said, “Now, at that time, what he said, what happened, I don’t want to get into their personal matters. My study of Vivek, I felt, if he stuck close to the ‘corporate’ type of characters, like very high intensity and this kind of aggressive nature, maybe like a young man.”

Nana Patekar

I thought this was the right way for him to continue. And you get some good or bad movies, but they all kind of add up to something.

Instead, I think getting into love stories or comedies or whatever, is what I think influenced him, and that’s my opinion. Some of them might even have done a good job. But I think this field does not suit me, at least it does not suit me. So I can’t speak on behalf of the people.”

Background of the feud between Salman Khan and Vivek Oberoi

For those who do not know, the feud between Salman Khan and Vivek Oberoi began in 2003.

Aishwarya Rai

After her separation from Salman. Vivek went public, claiming that Salman called him more than 40 times in one night with threats and abusive words about his family. Big industry names boycotted Vivek, canceled his films, and stalled his career despite his hits like Company and Saathiya. In 2010, Vivek apologized to Salman at an award ceremony by bending down and holding his ears, but the actors have maintained their distance ever since.
