Saudi Arabia has officially announced the 2026 Eid al-Fitr holiday for employees in government, private and non-profit sectors, giving millions of workers a clear idea of their vacation at the end of Ramadan. The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development confirmed the decision, and specified the start date and duration of the leave in line with labor regulations in the Kingdom.

Saudi Arabia Eid Mushrooms 2026 vacation dates

According to the Ministry, the Eid al-Fitr holiday for the private and non-profit sectors will begin at the end of working hours on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, corresponding to Ramadan 29, 1447 AH. The break will last for four days. Therefore, employees are expected to remain off duty until Saturday, March 21, 2026, before resuming work based on their company’s official schedule.

For the government sector, holiday schedules are usually issued through official circulars, with public sector employees also receiving several days off on the occasion of the end of Ramadan. This announcement ensures cross-sector compatibility, allowing families to plan their celebrations and travel arrangements in advance.

How is the date of Eid al-Fitr 2026 determined?

Eid al-Fitr falls on the first day of Shawwal, the month following Ramadan in the Islamic lunar calendar.

The exact date depends on the sighting of the crescent. If Ramadan completes 29 days, it is expected that Eid will begin on Thursday, March 19, 2026. If the crescent is not sighted, Ramadan will have completed 30 days and Eid will begin a day later. Official confirmation will be made by the Saudi authorities after the crescent sighting committees finish their observations.Since the Islamic calendar is lunar, the dates change early each year according to the Gregorian calendar.

This makes official announcements particularly important for businesses, travel operators and residents planning for the future.

Preparing for Eid al-Fitr

With the dates now confirmed, the kingdom is shifting into high gear for the celebrations. Eid al-Fitr, which translates to “the feast of breaking the fast,” marks the end of the dawn-to-sunset fasting of Ramadan.

  • Shopping and Travel: Airports and shopping malls in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam expect a huge increase in traffic as residents prepare for family gatherings and “Eidiya” (gift-giving).
  • Crescent sighting: While the holiday dates have been set, the official start of Shawwal (the day of Eid) still depends on the traditional sighting of the moon. If Ramadan lasts 30 days, Eid will fall on Friday, March 20; If it is 29 days, it will begin on Thursday, March 19.
  • Regional Context: Saudi Arabia’s announcement comes on the heels of similar statements from the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, leaving much of the Gulf region in for a simultaneous period of rest and contemplation.

Eid al-Fitr All over the Kingdom

Eid al-Fitr is one of the most important celebrations in Saudi Arabia and throughout the Islamic world.

The day begins with a special congregational prayer held shortly after sunrise, followed by family gatherings, festive meals and the giving of zakat al-fitr, a charitable contribution made before Eid prayers.By announcing the 2026 Eid al-Fitr holiday in advance, Saudi authorities have provided clarity and stability, ensuring smooth planning for government institutions, private companies and millions of residents preparing to celebrate the end of Ramadan.
