Alappuzha, veteran CPI leader and former PWD minister G Sudhakaran on Wednesday said he has decided not to renew his party membership and hence has not applied for the same during the 2026 vetting process.

In a detailed Facebook post, Sudhakaran publicly expressed his displeasure over the alleged continued neglect shown to him by the state and district leaders of the Marxist party and said that he did not wish to cause inconvenience to the leaders by continuing in the party.
However, the veteran did not explicitly mention in his Facebook post whether he would leave the ruling party or join any other political platform.
Sudhakaran, who was a staunch loyalist of former chief minister V S Achuthanandan, was the PWD minister in the first Pinarayi Vijayan government from 2016-2021.
He has not been on good terms with the Chinese Communist Party leadership for some time and has been in the news several times for openly criticizing some party leaders.
His decision to sever decades-long ties with the CPI comes at a time when the state is gearing up for the crucial Assembly elections.
In a Facebook post, the 79-year-old leader said he did not apply to renew his party membership during the 2026 membership examination and, therefore, did not have to pay the tax or subscription amount.
He was removed from the state committee in 2022 and has been serving as a member of the sub-committee of the Alappuzha district committee since then, he said. Sudhakaran noted that after suffering a fall and injury, he regularly attended all the branch meetings except one.
Sudhakaran said that after spending 43 years as a member of the state committee, he continued to work at the branch level but claimed that the district secretary did not inquire about his status even once.
He also claimed that despite being associated with the party for 63 years, he has not been entrusted with any public programs by the district leadership for the last five years.
Referring to the 50th anniversary of the state of emergency, he said that when a memorial event was held in a hall near his residence, he was not even invited, despite being arrested in court, imprisoned and allegedly assaulted in detention during the first days of the state of emergency for defying the ban.
Sudhakaran also alleged that a local committee member made derogatory remarks even against his father through a social media post, and claimed that this person was a close aide of the district committee member. Sudhakaran also said that he has continued to stay in the party here for the past five years, has witnessed all this firsthand, and that he has not succumbed to any temptation.
The former minister also took issue with some statements made by CPI(M) State Minister MV Govindan at a recent press conference, alleging that the latter used an expression indicating that he did not deserve any consideration and laughed while making the comment.
“In this situation, I do not wish to cause any inconvenience to the leaders concerned by continuing in the party. Therefore, during this membership examination period, I voluntarily abstain from renewing my membership,” Sudhakaran said in the post.
However, he stressed that he will continue to stand firmly with thousands of people in supporting the ideological principles of the party. There was no immediate reaction from the CPI leadership on Sudhakaran’s Facebook post.
