Hilary Duff recently spoke out about how Cameron Diaz and her husband, Benji Madden, helped her family during the wildfires that tore through Los Angeles in 2025. The Southern California wildfires in January 2025 served as a stark reminder of climate-induced disasters.
On the one hand, dry conditions, high winds and a prolonged drought resulted in a devastating fire that spread quickly, burning historic neighborhoods and destroying private homes and cultural landmarks. In the aftermath, many families have been brought to their knees, dealing with displacement, trauma, financial stress and more. On the other hand, this difficult time was also a testament to how people came together to help each other rebuild lives from scratch.
How Cameron Diaz stepped into Hilary Duff’s family
On The Drew Barrymore Show, Hilary Duff talked about how wildfires forced her family out of their home. Suddenly she, her husband, Matthew Koma, and their four children (plus pets) had nowhere to go. Evacuation orders were issued, and the fire was getting closer by the hour.Enter Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden. They invited Hillary’s entire crew: kids, pets, everyone. This kind of generosity? It’s huge when you’re scared and scrambling.
Actress Lizzie McGuire admitted that she and Matthew had a heated argument during one of those nights. The tension was real: Imagine trying to wrangle four kids and a bunch of animals in someone else’s house while your own is under threat. At one point, things got so heated that Hilary threw Matthew’s phone into a thorn bush outside. She laughed about it later, saying she felt strangely proud of her goal, and joked on the show: “It was bougainvillea and I was so proud of myself because those goals are sharp.”
“I was telling myself, ‘Go fishing from the balcony.’” Looking back, the whole moment is kind of funny, and even sweet in its wild way. But she explained that what really matters is how kind Cameron and Benji are to her family.
Los Angeles fires: What happened?
According to ABC News, January 2025 was a rough month for Los Angeles and the entirety of Southern California. With strong winds and dry weather, wildfires spread quickly, especially the Palisades Fire, which ended up being one of the worst fires anyone could remember. The fire swept through the neighborhoods, forcing more than 150,000 people to leave their homes. Nearly 7,000 buildings were destroyed, and at least 12 people died. Communities like Malibu, Altadena, Pacific Palisades, and Hollywood Hills have taken a hit.
People watched entire neighborhoods disappear. It’s been tough across the board. Even famous faces like Paris Hilton, Jeff Bridges, Billy Crystal and many others lost their homes or had to evacuate.
