It’s the kind of job security that a Berlin Film Festival director can only dream of.

Alberto Barbera, director of the Venice Film Festival, has extended his contract for another two years. Barbera, whose mandate was due to end after this year’s 83rd edition, will remain in office for 2027 and 2028.

The Venice Film Festival’s board of directors, headed by Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, approved the reappointment.

Barbera has been artistic director at Venice since 2012 and previously held the position from 1998 to 2001. He is widely credited with raising the festival’s profile internationally and positioning it as a can’t-miss event for the awards season. The long list of Venice premieres that reached Oscar glory includes Barbera’s reign attractiveness (2013), Highlight (2015), La la land (2016), Favorites (2018), and joker (2019).
