According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the total lunar eclipse will have a magnitude of 1.155, which means the entire moon will pass into the Earth’s umbral shadow. In contrast, a partial lunar eclipse occurs when only part of the moon enters the shadow.

While the eclipse will be visible across India, East Asia, Australia and the Americas, sky observing conditions will vary across regions. In most parts of India, observers will see the final phase of the eclipse when the moon rises.

However, parts of northeastern India and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands may also see the end of the macro phase.

Lunar Eclipse LIVE Updates: What is a total lunar eclipse?

Lunar Eclipse LIVE Updates: A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are in perfect alignment, and the Earth is located between the Sun and Moon. This prevents direct sunlight from reaching the Moon, causing it to pass through the Earth’s umbra and often turn a reddish color – known as a ‘blood moon’.

IMD confirmed that today’s eclipse will be deep, with a magnitude of 1.155.
