Stuck in Dubai, PV Sindhu withdraws from Pan England amid rising tensions in the Middle East

PV Sindhu withdrew from the All England Championships on Monday, as the player and her Indonesian coach Irwansyah Adi Pratama are stuck in Dubai due to the situation in West Asia.Confirming the development, Badminton Association of India (BAI) secretary Sanjay Mishra told TOI that Sindhu will compete in the Swiss Open Super-300 next week.

“Sindhu is not playing All England due to the situation in Dubai.

“She will compete in the Swiss Open next week,” Mishra told TOI.

As of Monday afternoon, a limited number of flights had resumed operations from Abu Dhabi, but Dubai Airport remained closed.The rest of the Indian team is in Birmingham for the Super-1000 tournament starting on Tuesday.Meanwhile, the Indian players will try to break the 25-year-old’s jinx in this prestigious tournament. Prakash Padukone (1980) and Pullela Gopichand (2001) were the only Indians to win the All England Championship.

Saina Nehwal (2015) and Lakshya Sen (2022) have reached the finals, while women’s doubles pair Theresa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand have reached the final four in 2022 and 2023.Lakshya may find it difficult this year as she knocked out top seed Shi Yuqi of China in the first round. Men’s singles fast badminton player Aayush Shetty will start against Alavi Farhan of Indonesia and may face Zhou Tien Zhen of Chinese Taipei in the next match.Indian top pair Satwiksraj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will face Malaysian pair Arun Tai and Kang Khai Kang Shing in the first round. A win here could put them up against Chen Bo Yang and Liu Yi from China in the second round.Trisa and Gayatri have done well in this tournament, but they have a tough first round against Sayaka Hirota and Ayako Sakuramoto. If they beat the Japanese, they could face seventh-seeded Chinese duo Li Yijing and Luo Shumin.
