While welcoming Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said relations between India and Canada have been “revitalized”.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is on a four-day visit to India as Ottawa moves to diversify its trade ties as well as renew ties with New Delhi after a diplomatic row.
“There are very few people in the world whose resume includes leading the central banks of two countries. Since our first meeting, our relationship has been revitalized, and mutual trust and positivity has flourished,” Prime Minister Modi said during the joint address with his Canadian counterpart.
Carney praises the “expansion” of relations with India
In his speech, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney praised the “expansion” of relations with India.
“There has been more interaction between the Canadian and Indian governments in the past year than in more than two decades combined,” the Labor leader said, adding that India and Canada have witnessed not just a renewal of relations, but “an expansion of a valuable partnership with new ambition, focus and new vision, a partnership between two confident nations that chart our course for the future.”
During his four-day visit, which began in Mumbai, India’s financial hub, the Canadian Prime Minister said that this visit would work to establish new economic and trade partnerships with New Delhi.
Echoing this sentiment, Prime Minister Modi announced that the two leaders “discussed transforming this vision into a next-level partnership. Our goal is to reach $50 billion in trade by 2030.”
He added: “Unlocking the full potential of economic cooperation is our priority. Therefore, we have decided to finalize the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement soon. This will create new investment and employment opportunities in both countries.”
India and Canada sign memorandums of understanding, marking a reset in relations.
India and Canada on Monday signed several memoranda of understanding (MoU) as part of their move to renew their relations. According to announcements by Prime Ministers Modi and Karni, the two countries signed agreements on cooperation in technology and innovation, promotion of renewable energy, and cooperation in the field of critical minerals and uranium supplies.
