The Congress on Saturday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying US President Donald Trump’s “full” support for Pakistan in its war with Afghanistan represents another setback to the “Indian embrace” and that the world, especially the US, has been given the self-proclaimed “Vishwaguru” measure.

Congressional Communications Secretary Jairam Ramesh noted that Trump once again went out of his way to praise the man whose inflammatory statements provided the backdrop for the terrorist attacks in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, which were orchestrated by Pakistan, in an apparent reference to Pakistani Army Chief General Asim Munir.

“President Trump’s full and unequivocal support for Pakistan in its war with Afghanistan represents another setback to Indian ‘arrogance,’” Ramesh said on Channel X.

“Our economic diplomacy with the United States has failed miserably, as evidenced by Mr. Modi suddenly capitulating to an obviously one-sided trade deal in which India made firm commitments, especially to import from American farmers, while the United States made vague commitments to allow more exports from India,” he added.

Not only that, days after the agreement, the US imposed 125.87 per cent import duty on solar modules from India, Ramesh noted.

“Our strategic diplomacy has taken repeated blows from President Trump, as he has time and again flattered the Pakistani establishment and reverted to the India-Pakistan hyphen,” he said.

“The Prime Minister, through his means, may be able to get awards. But the fact is that the self-proclaimed Vishwaguru has been exposed, and the world, especially the US, has gotten the hang of it,” Ramesh said.

His comments come after Trump, amid escalating tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, said that he gets along with Pakistan very well and that the country is in very good shape.

Asked whether he would intervene to stop the fighting, Trump said: “I would, but I get along with Pakistan very well. You have a great prime minister, you have a great general there. You have a great leader, a couple of people I really respect very much, and I think Pakistan is in a very good position.”
