A 23-year-old woman was raped twice in one day at two separate places by her boyfriend and a stranger offering help and then thrown from a four-storey building leading to her death in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district, police said on Friday.

The police arrested the accused and detained them under different sections of BNS on charges of kidnapping, rape and murder.
“The incident took place on February 22 after the woman left her home with plans to elope with her boyfriend, who asked her to come to the temple and promised to marry her. However, he took her to a secluded place, raped her and left her at Rahma bus stand,” Jagatsinghpur police inspector Ankit Kumar Verma told reporters.
While the victim was waiting at the bus stop, another man hailing from Jharkhand, who was heading to nearby Paradip on his motorcycle, saw the unfortunate woman and offered her help.
However, he took her to the roof of his rented accommodation somewhere in Paradip town and raped her again, the SP said.
He added that the accused threw the woman from the roof of the building, which led to her death, and her body was found the next morning.
The victim’s brother lodged a complaint with Paradip Model Police Station on February 25, alleging that his sister was raped and murdered on February 22, the SP said. A case of unnatural death was recorded on February 23 after the woman’s body was recovered.
Earlier, on the evening of February 22, the woman’s brother filed a disappearance case at Tirtul police station when his sister did not return home.
BJD president and Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, Naveen Patnaik, condemned the incident and demanded justice for women and other victims of recent rape incidents.
“How many innocent lives will be lost? From underage girls to differently-abled young women, no one is safe. So, does the rule of law still exist in the state? The news of heinous crimes coming from Kanhari in Angul, Kuchinda in Sambalpur and Paradip is deeply disturbing. Chaos everywhere, insecurity everywhere, mother!” He said in X’s post.
“While the government gives lengthy speeches on women’s safety and law and order, the ground reality is very alarming. Even in broad daylight, an atmosphere of fear prevails. Despite the recurrence of such unfortunate incidents, the government’s failure to take any stringent and exemplary measures encourages criminals. The government must take proactive steps to spread awareness about women’s safety and ensure that the rule of law is maintained in the country,” the former Prime Minister added.
