200,000 salary for sweepers, 7 lakh for engineers: Revised wages in Telangana raise eyebrows

Telangana’s monthly salary and pension bill has risen sharply over the past decade, reaching around $100,000. $Rs 6,000 crore has reportedly been spent on pensions and payments. State power utility engineers are putting it up $7 lakh, and Class 4 employees, including cleaners, earn around 2 lakh.

Telangana Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao made the remarks on Wednesday, during a conference on the recommendations of the 16th Finance Commission. He said that the state is spending $The Times Of India reported that Rs 6,000 crore per month on salary is four times the output (total money paid to individuals) when the state was formed in 2014.

The chief secretary said workers’ salaries and pensions increased by 300% due to successive wage revisions, which also clashed with election cycles and led to increased expenditures.

Energy utility engineers are among the highest paid

Among the highest paid workers in the state are senior engineers at Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Limited (TGGENCO), Telangana State Transmission Corporation Limited and Telangana Northern Power Distribution Company Limited.

In these organizations, periodic reviews were made every four years on the monthly salaries of engineers $7 lakh at the senior levels, Rao informed.

Meanwhile, entry-level municipal employees, including cleaners and drivers, receive wages of approx $28,000 per month.

Increased salaries lead to intense competition

The chief secretary also said that the increase in salaries has led to increased competition for government jobs. He said that about 799 candidates are competing for each of the 563 first group positions that were announced recently. Candidates across categories have been preparing for selection for years, fueling a thriving training industry.

While spending increased, the official said the Telangana government has managed to sustain itself through strong economic performance with nearly 11 per cent growth and a steady increase in revenue sources.

Rao also spoke about the robust digital infrastructure for subsidies.
