“The American dream is...”: Indian Redditors share dead end in US without H-1B visa

An Indian Redditor shared the professional hardships they have to go through in the US unless they are selected in the H-1B visa lottery. H-1B registration for 2027 begins on March 4, but the Redditor said the company has already informed him that he will not be sponsored, although it will not require a $100,000 fee since the Redditor is already based in the US.

“I arrived in the US in 2021. I was lucky to get an internship, worked extremely hard, and eventually got a full-time offer. However, as layoffs began across the industry, my job offer was rescinded as I was about to graduate in December. With so little time left, I worked harder than ever and was able to get another full-time opportunity.” The Redditor said, adding that he was not selected in his third attempt as well and took up another master’s degree to continue living in the US and working in the same company.

“Now, just one month before the H-1B lottery registration period, I have been informed that my company will not be able to sponsor me for various reasons – even though it will not incur the large sponsorship fee in my case. That moment made me realize that loyalty to an organization does not always guarantee stability. Sometimes, despite your dedication, you can still fall behind,” The Redditor said, adding how his friends suggest marrying a US citizen to get the visa “I do not support this idea, as I believe it is unethical and illegal.” Reddit said.

“The American dream is dead”

Other Redditors commented on how the American dream is dead, and the H-1B is just a matter of luck. Many social media users commented that they moved to Canada even after obtaining a valid H-1B visa because there is no future for H-1B workers in the US either. “I literally received an email from HR saying they would not pursue my H1B this year. I’m in the same boat as you, I didn’t get selected 3 times but moved to Canada instead. I’ve been here for 8 years.

All my friends are in the United States. I feel so lonely here,” Someone commented.
