Several shots were fired at a car carrying five passengers at Kashmir Gate in north Delhi late on Tuesday, police said, adding that one person was injured. A man claiming to be gang lawyer Lawrence Bishnoi was in the car at the time of the accident.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Central Range) Madhur Verma, who visited the site, confirmed the incident.

According to an officer familiar with the matter, the incident was reported around 10:30 pm in connection with several shots being fired near ISBT Kashmir Gate. The officer said: “When the police arrived at the scene, they were informed that unknown assailants fired several shots at a car. One person was injured.”

The officer added that five men were in the car and a man named Sandeep, who was sitting at the back, was shot near his shoulder at the back. “A man who identified himself as Deepak Khatri said that he is a lawyer and represents gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. But his claims are being verified,” the officer said.

Later, preliminary investigation revealed that Deepak Khatri’s wife Rajni Khatri is Bishnoi’s lawyer and Sandeep works in an NGO. “The five people were sitting in the Ciaz when the attackers came and opened fire from behind,” the officer said.

According to initial findings, three men came on a motorcycle and one of them opened fire, but CCTV footage will bring more clarity.

“Statements of the vehicle occupants and local residents are being recorded. The crime and forensics team has been called for inspection and CCTV footage is being obtained,” the officer said.

The case will be registered under relevant sections in due course, they said.
