Muhammad Yunus returns to nonprofit work after 18 months leading Bangladesh's interim government

Muhammad Yunus has returned to work at his non-profit organization after stepping down as chief advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh, a position he held for nearly 18 months.Yunus resigned on February 16, days after the formation of the newly elected government.

He had returned from self-imposed exile in August 2024, shortly after the iron-fisted government of Sheikh Hasina was overthrown in a student-led uprising, and fled by helicopter to India.

The 85-year-old arrived at the Yunus Center office in Mirpur on Sunday, according to a post on his Facebook page.The post read: “A warm welcome to Professor Muhammad Yunus after he returned to his previous duties on Sunday, after an 18-month hiatus during which he led the interim government in Bangladesh.”

Younis was received by his colleagues and presented with flowers upon his arrival. He later met with managing directors and advisors from Grameen institutions and the Yunus Center to review the paused initiatives and outline upcoming plans.He is also scheduled to resume living at his home in Gulshan, Dhaka, by the end of the month, after staying at the official residence provided during his leadership of the interim government.There has been speculation that Yunus could be accommodated in a constitutional role, perhaps with the support of the next government.Tariq Rahman, 60, head of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and scion of one of the country’s most powerful political families, will lead the South Asian nation of 170 million people.
