India has asked all its citizens currently in Iran to leave the country by any available means of transportation in a new advisory issued on Monday, February 23.

The United States and Iran recently resumed talks mediated by Oman on a possible deal, but Washington has at the same time increased its military presence in the region, sending two aircraft carriers, fighter jets and weapons to back up its warnings. (Archive photo/AFP)

These warnings come amid looming fears of war in the Middle East and increasing tensions between Tehran and Washington.

According to the Indian Embassy in Tehran, the new advisory has been issued “in light of the evolving situation in Iran” and is a continuation of a similar advisory issued earlier this year on January 5, 2026.

India has asked all Indian citizens currently in Iran, including students, pilgrims, businessmen and tourists, to leave the country by available means of transportation, including commercial flights.

“The January 14, 2026 warning is reiterated that all Indian citizens and PIOS should exercise due caution, avoid areas of protests or demonstrations, stay in touch with the Indian Embassy in Iran and monitor local media for any developments,” the advisory said.

The Indian Embassy issues helplines for emergency contact

The Indian Embassy in Tehran has requested all Indian citizens in Iran to keep their immigration and travel documents such as ID cards and passports readily available and to contact the embassy in case any assistance is required.

All Indian citizens in Iran have also been asked to register with the embassy through the link – https://www.meaers.com/request/home – and they also said that “in case any Indian citizen is unable to register due to internet outage in Iran, their families in India are requested to do so.”

Student-led protests break out in Iran, and the threat of war looms

The new Indian warnings come as Iran witnesses student-led protests continuing for a second day on Sunday at some universities, even as Tehran and Washington continue to engage in talks to reach a nuclear deal.

The next round of talks is scheduled to be held in Geneva later this week on Thursday, February 26, Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi confirmed.

But days before Amman’s confirmation, US President Donald Trump issued a warning to Iran, demanding that it reconcile with the Americans within 10 to 15 days.

Trump said: “Either we will reach an agreement, or it will be unfortunate for them… 10 to 15 days will be enough time.”
