'Be Aware': Indian Embassy issues warning to citizens in Mexico after powerful drug lord El Mencho is killed.

NEW DELHI: The Indian Embassy on Monday issued an advisory asking Indian citizens in several parts of Mexico to stay indoors after a major security operation that killed a top gang leader and sparked widespread violence.Mexican authorities said Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, leader of the Jalisco New Generation gang, was injured in a clash with soldiers in Tapalpa and died while being airlifted to Mexico City.“Dear all Indian citizens in Mexico: There are ongoing security operations and associated roadblocks and criminal activities, and Indian citizens in the state of Jalisco (regions of Puerto Vallarta, Chapala and Guadalajara), the state of Tamaulipas (regions of Reynosa and other municipalities), the regions of Michoacán State, the State of Guerrero and the State of Nuevo León must shelter in place until further notice,” the Indian Embassy said.

“For assistance, please contact the Embassy of India on +52 55 4847 7539,” she added.Officials said that six gunmen suspected of being from drug gangs were killed in the operation, three soldiers were wounded and taken to hospital in the capital, and two suspects were arrested. Authorities also confiscated a cache of weapons, including rocket launchers capable of shooting down aircraft and destroying armored vehicles.Officials described the strike in western Jalisco as one of the most significant blows to organized crime since the arrest of Joaquin Guzman and Ismael Zambada Garcia, co-founders of the Sinaloa cartel.

Within hours of the announcement, cartel gunmen set fire to vehicles, blocked highways and clashed with security forces, spreading retaliatory violence across at least five states and paralyzing transportation networks.Amid the unrest, the US State Department and Canadian authorities also urged their citizens in parts of Mexico to shelter in place due to violence, road closures and flight cancellations.
