Railways has integrated Artificial Intelligence (AI) with Railmadad, Onboard Housekeeping Services Coach Mitra and RailOne App – seven mobile applications that predict the confirmation rate of waiting tickets in an effort to provide efficient services to passengers.

The Center for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) – the technology arm of the Indian Railways – is also working to integrate AI into 15 other applications to improve safety, increase freight and better operations of trains.

The other seven operationalized AI-embedded apps include Generation of Optimized and Automated Loco Links (GOAL), Coaching Crew Link Management System (CCLMS) and Track Management System.

Coach Mitra, meanwhile, operates in 74 trains.

“We have recently implemented an AI system in the RailOne app. It provides very accurate information on the chances of validating a waiting ticket. Similarly, AI is already working in Railways’ complaint redressal system, RailMadad. It categorizes and prioritizes complaints based on urgency and type,” said GVL Satya Kumar. Bharat Mandapam.

“We have integrated Bhashini to convert voice to text in 12 languages. It also identifies complaint trends and gauges passenger sentiment for proactive action,” he said.

Kumar said CRIS is also working on AI solutions to predict railway traffic congestion and expedite the road to freight train movement using GST data.

“We are trying to create a system where railways can decide which new commodity to add to its freight basket. With the help of GST data, we have been able to map the movement of goods from specific locations. Based on that, we have created a total of 300 freight clusters. These are potential freight areas that railways can move,” Kumar said.

Another AI system in the pipeline is developing an incident prediction model for railway assets using historical incident and failure data. For the safe operation of trains, assets such as tracks, rails, locomotives, coaches, wagons and signaling systems must function properly.

The AI system predicts in advance which assets need repairs, moving away from traditional maintenance methods that only respond after failure.

CRIS is also working on a crowd management solution that integrates reserved ticketing data, unreserved ticketing data and train movement data to track peak congestion at a particular platform in a station on an hourly basis. The AI system correlates ticket purchase timestamps with train schedules to visualize and map platform-specific footfall density.

It improves predictive models by accounting for festival logic, special events and specific weekend travel dynamics that deviate from standard patterns.

Officials said the AI system will also detect potential obstacles at station entry points and foot over bridges to ensure safe flow of passengers.
