Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Friday presided over the marriage ceremony of 73 couples on the occasion of the 73rd birthday of the Prime Minister and his father MK Stalin.

The DMK’s youth wing secretary noted that the vast majority of the couples were self-chosen “love marriages”.

He said: “I asked one of the grooms if it was a love marriage. He told me that he struggled for two and a half years to achieve this. This makes me very happy because my marriage was also a love marriage,” sparking cheers from the audience.

But although love marriages require “great courage” and the ability to adapt to the partner’s heart, he pointed out that the joy visible in the place is a testimony to the success of such marriages.

At the function organized by the DMK’s Chennai East district unit at Kalaivanar Arangam, Udhayanidhi also distributed festive gifts to the newlyweds and presented two wheelers to 76 women party workers.

He also pointed out that under the current DMK regime, consecration ceremonies (Kudamuzhukku) had been conducted for 5,000 temples – a feat he claimed was unprecedented.

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized this roughly $Rs 9,000 crore worth of temple land was recovered from encroachments during this period.

Udhayanidhi also lauded the distribution of two-wheelers to women cadres of the party, recognizing their popular contribution to the DMK.

The event marks the beginning of the party’s month-long celebrations to mark the Prime Minister’s 73rd birthday.
