Police said that two Punjab Police personnel were killed after the two opened fire on each other following a heated altercation while on duty at a border post in Gurdaspur district.

The incident took place in Adhiyan village in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, approximately two kilometers from the Indo-Pak border, at a location controlled by the Punjab Police in close coordination with the Border Security Force (BSF) which also acts as the second line of defence, PTI reported, citing police officials.

The deceased individuals have been identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector Gurnam Singh and Ashok Kumar, who was a watchman of the house.

Tension gripped the area following the shooting incident, and Aditya, senior superintendent of police from Gurdaspur, reached the spot to assess the situation.

A heated argument ends in gunfire

According to preliminary information, an altercation broke out between the two officers, which developed into a dangerous confrontation that led to gunfire. However, police are still investigating the exact cause of death.

The police cordoned off the area, and technical and forensic teams were present at the scene. A comprehensive investigation is underway, and evidence is being collected from the scene.

The bodies were taken to the hospital for examination, after which the exact cause of death will be confirmed.

Meanwhile, Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Waring urged the state and central governments to investigate the incident.
