A policewoman was killed and at least 15 others injured overnight in explosions in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, which local authorities called a “terrorist act” on Sunday (Feb 22, 2026).

The explosions occurred shortly after police responded to a report of a break-in at a shop in the city center at 12:30 am (2230 GMT Saturday), according to the Lviv regional prosecutor’s office.

The first explosion occurred as the initial patrol arrived, followed by a second explosion moments later after another crew arrived on the scene.

A 23-year-old female police officer was killed while a patrol car and a civilian vehicle were destroyed, officials said.

“This is definitely an act of terrorism,” Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovy said in a Facebook post. “We currently have 15 people receiving medical attention, some of whom are in critical condition.

“A policewoman has passed away. My deepest condolences to the family and close friends,” he added.

Lviv, close to the Polish border and far from the front lines, has seen sporadic attacks and security incidents since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, but deadly explosions in the city center have been rare.
