NEW DELHI: Congress on Saturday asked the government to “postpone” the India-US trade deal in light of the US Supreme Court’s decision to invalidate reciprocal tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump and “renegotiate” the terms of the deal.Congress MP Rahul Gandhi accused Prime Minister Modi of being “compromised”, alleging that his (Modi’s) “betrayal” in the trade deal is now exposed. “He can’t renegotiate. He’ll give in again.” In a post on website Congress Secretary-General for Communications Jairam Ramesh said there is a clause in the Interim Agreement stipulating that if one country amends the terms, the other country can do so as well.

Referring to Trump’s statement after the Security Council resolution, Ramesh said the trade agreement still stands and said Modi should say in clear terms that the “interim framework agreement” cannot be implemented under the current circumstances. The party’s general secretary, Randeep Surjewala, wondered whether the Modi government would now announce, in the “national interest”, that it would buy Russian and Iranian crude oil at a cheaper price.
