New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday reiterated his remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that he has been “compromised”. In a social media post on X, Rahul said that PM Modi’s “betrayal” has been exposed and he will “surrender again”.“The Prime Minister has been exposed. His betrayal is now exposed. He cannot renegotiate. He will surrender again,” Rahul said.Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge also launched criticism against the Center and asked why “the Modi government did not wait for the US Supreme Court’s ruling on tariffs before rushing into a trap deal.”“Ignorant foreign policy or unilateral surrender? Why didn’t the Modi government wait for the US Supreme Court’s ruling on tariffs before rushing into a trap deal, which extracted huge concessions from India?” Kharg asked.“The joint statement talked about eliminating tariffs on many US exports to India, effectively opening up Indian agriculture to US goods, a plan to import US goods worth $500 billion, a commitment to stop purchasing Russian oil that is hurting our energy security, and several tax concessions on the digital front,” he added. This comes a day after Youth Congress workers carried out a shirtless march in protest against the US-India trade deal.
Meanwhile, the US Supreme Court ruled by a vote of 6 to 3 that the Trump administration exceeded its legal authority by using the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose broad tariffs on imports.Calling the Supreme Court ruling a “terrible decision,” Trump announced that he would sign an executive order for a 10% global tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974. This authority allows for temporary surcharges on imports (up to 15%) for 150 days to address a balance of payments deficit.Congress leader and former Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Friday also demanded that the government explain the impact of the ruling on the ‘deal’ announced on February 6 between the US and India.Chidambaram said he stated that if the Supreme Court overturns President Trump’s tariff imposition, the result will be that the United States and India will return to the status quo that existed before April 2, 2025.The former finance minister said: “Meanwhile, the US has extracted several concessions from India without giving up any of them. What will happen to those concessions? The joint statement announced the elimination of tariffs on several goods that the US will export to India; that India intends to import goods worth $500 billion from the US; that India will not buy Russian oil; that India will remove non-tariff barriers to US goods, etc.”He asked, “What will happen to those promises? An Indian team is now in the United States to finalize the text of the framework agreement. What will the team do now?” Chidambaram said.
