DMDK and DMK sign first ever poll agreement
CHENNAI: Premallatha Vijayakant sought to evoke emotions and nostalgia while addressing journalists at Anna Arivalayam on Thursday. But what stood out was pure politics: her party, the DMDK, for the first time since it was founded by Vijayakant in 2005, formed an alliance with the DMK.“This was scheduled to happen in 2016,” she said of the talks held by then DMK president M Karunanidhi with Vijayakant. “After 10 years, this is now happening with the blessing of Kalaignar and the captain,” she said. Premalatha was holding talks with the two major alliances in Tamil Nadu. On Thursday, after calling CM MK Stalin at the DMK headquarters, she said the decision was in line with the wishes of the majority of DMDK workers and cadres.Stalin welcomed the DMDK with a post on X. “Let your arrival in the DMK alliance contribute to the development of the country. We will continue to travel together for the all-round growth of the country.”After meeting Stalin, Premalatha said the two sides would soon discuss seat sharing. Regarding reports that the DMDK might get the Rajya Sabha seat, Premalatha said Stalin would make an “official statement”.Recalling Karunanidhi’s famous line “pazham nazhuvi paalil vizhum (the fruit will slip and fall into the milk)”, referring to an “imminent alliance” that did not materialise, Premalatha now said that the fruit actually slipped and fell into “milk filled with honey”. She added an emotional element to the alliance, noting the relationships between the two families. “You all know that our marriage was officiated by Kalaignar (Karunanidhi) and our wedding was held at Anna Arivalayam,” Premalatha said.
DMDK cadres celebrated the alliance by launching fireworks and distributing sweets. While Premalatha said the alliance would win more than 200 seats, Deputy Chief Minister Udhyanidhi Stalin said the entry of DMDK added strength to the alliance.
