Actress Priyanka Chopra has praised SS Rajamouli, who directed Varanasi, the film that marks her Telugu debut. Speaking to AP, the actress said she believes Varanasi will be “really career-defining” for her. In the film, Priyanka plays the role of Mandakini.
Priyanka pins her hopes on Varanasi
“The director’s name is SS Rajamouli, sir, and he is one of the best directors we have in India. I think his film will be really career-defining for me. I’m very excited about it,” the actor said. Priyanka is returning to Hindi films after 2019 with Varanasi.
What Priyanka recently said about Varanasi
Recently speaking to Variety, Priyanka said that the film is “unlike anything” she has ever done. “This is unlike anything I’ve done before,” she said. “We travel from like Antarctica to…and the worlds he creates are so much larger than life, no one has the vision that he has. So I’m excited to see more.”
Priyanka revealed what she told the director before signing the film. “I was like, ‘Listen, I’m going back to Hindi films.’ I have to do a dance song. Like you should make me dance.” I know I would, but we haven’t shot it yet. Well, that’s one of the last things I’m really looking forward to. But we did do one where the choreography was crazy. “It’s so complicated,” she added.

The epic action-adventure film also features Mahesh Babu as the protagonist Rudra, while Prithviraj Sukumaran plays the antagonist Kumbha. SS Rajamouli’s film will be released on April 7, 2027. Varanasi will have music by MM Keeravani. It is produced by Sri Durga Arts and Showing Business.
The official title of the film was announced in November 2025 during a major event in Hyderabad that attracted around 50,000 fans. Rajamouli also revealed a short teaser featuring stunning visuals and gave a glimpse of a story spanning different places and periods – Antarctica, Varanasi, Kenya, 512 AD, 2027 AD, and even Thrithayuga. Finally, the teaser showed a stunning shot of Mahesh, riding a bull and carrying a trident as he charged through Varanasi, wearing a blood-stained shirt and a Nandi necklace.
