NEW DELHI: The government on Tuesday made clear that the responsible use of artificial intelligence is no longer optional – and that a global consensus is already taking shape, with India in talks with more than 30 countries to address risks and prevent misuse of artificial intelligence.Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnao said protecting society from the harmful effects of artificial intelligence, including deepfakes, disinformation and manipulation, has become a political and administrative priority across countries.

He said India is working with governments in all regions to develop joint technical and legal solutions to deal with the misuse of AI, suggesting that countries are moving beyond broad moral principles to concrete actions.
“The misuse of AI cannot be dealt with simply by passing a law.”Issues such as deepfakes and disinformation pose direct threats to democratic institutions, social trust and public safety, making government intervention inevitable, he said. He noted that discussions are ongoing regarding watermarking AI-generated content, stronger accountability of platforms, and common safety standards.
