New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday called on the Indian IT sector to lead not just in providing services but in building artificial intelligence products, platforms and solutions that work for the benefit of India and the world. “India’s IT sector has been the backbone of our services exports and a key driver of economic growth.
AI represents a huge opportunity and challenge for this sector… The fundamental shift is that AI is not replacing the IT sector.
“It transforms her,” he told ANI.Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: “While general-purpose AI tools are widespread, enterprise-level AI adoption is concentrated in specific sectors. Incumbent IT companies continue to play critical roles in solving complex business problems.”Many saw the Prime Minister’s remarks as an exhortation to Indian software services companies to develop new capabilities and work on products and platforms – something many Indian IT companies are not known for despite having big piles of cash. Global tech giants are also facing challenges from AInative companies like OpenAI and Anthropic.India should not only be a consumer of technology but also a creator, which is a key pillar of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ principle, Modi said. “My vision is that India should be among the top three AI powers globally, not just in AI consumption but in innovation.
Our AI models will be deployed around the world, serving billions in their native languages. Our AI startups will be worth hundreds of billions, creating millions of high-quality jobs, the Prime Minister said. The Prime Minister also sought to address concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence on jobs, and pledged to arm young people with the required skills. “I understand our youth’s anxiety about the disruptions AI is causing in the job market. Preparedness is the best antidote to fear.
This is why we are investing in upskilling our employees and reskilling them for an AI-driven future… We are not treating this as a future problem but as a present necessity.”“History has shown that work does not disappear because of technology. Its nature is changing and new types of jobs are being created. While some jobs may be redefined, digital transformation will also add new technological jobs to India’s economy. History teaches us that whenever innovation occurs, new opportunities emerge. The same will be true in the era of artificial intelligence,” Modi said.
