Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said in Srinagar on Tuesday that a decision on restoration of statehood in Jammu and Kashmir would be heard “very soon”.

Arjun Ram Meghwal said Home Minister Amit Shah had already assured the Lok Sabha that due process would be followed and the people of Jammu and Kashmir would get “what is due to them”. (File Photo/Parliament TV)Speaking to reporters at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Conference Center (SKICC) in Srinagar, Meghwal described the matter as “very sensitive” but reiterated the Centre’s commitment to the process.

He said Home Minister Amit Shah had already assured the Lok Sabha that due process would be followed and people would get “what is due to them”.

Meghwal was in Srinagar to lead a regional workshop on the Tele-Law (DISHA) scheme focusing on technology-enabled legal services. However, his comments about the political situation in the region immediately attracted attention.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who was also present at the event, expressed cautious optimism in response to the minister’s remarks. Abdullah said that while his government is in constant dialogue with the Centre, the process has taken longer than expected.

He remarked that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have been waiting for “good news” for one-and-a-half years and expressed hope that the Union Minister’s initial decision indication would finally materialize.
