Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala police have launched an investigation into the theft of a pair of ivory tusks from an Indian army camp in the Pangode neighborhood of Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram city, officials said.
The complaint states that two tusks, which were displayed inside the officers’ mess at the camp, were found missing between February 11 and 12 (Unsplash/Representative photo)Based on a complaint received on Wednesday from officers of the Indian Army station, the Pujapura police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under Sections 331(4) (entry into house) and 305(3) (theft at sensitive places) of the Indian Penal Code (BNS) and initiated an investigation.
“The complaint states that two ivory tusks displayed inside the officers’ mess in the camp were found missing between February 11 and 12. There was a function inside the military camp on Wednesday, after which the tusks were reported stolen. We are informed that certain persons were brought in from outside to arrange light and sound,” an official told Police Requesting App.
“As it is a highly secured location with strict restrictions, it could be someone coming from outside for the programme. Or it could be someone inside the camp. We are investigating. No one has been arrested yet,” the officer said, while checking CCTV visuals in and around the military camp.
The value of the tusks is said to be ₹2 crores in the open market.
A defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a parallel internal investigation by the army was underway to nab the culprits behind the theft. He said, some people are being interrogated.
Pangodde Army Camp is an important defense installation in Kerala and functions under the Southern Command of the Army.
