Amir Ejaz Khan will take over the seat from Nani Gopal Mandal, a Hindu candidate from the now-banned Awami League party who previously held the post twice in 2008 and 2024.

History of Khulna-1 ConstituencyAwami League’s Panchanan Biswas won the 2001 election. In 2008, Awami League nominated Nani Gopal Mandal who won the election. However, in 2014 and 2018, Panchanan Biswas returned as MP on Awami League ticket.

In 2024, Nani Gopal Mandal contested on an Awami League ticket and won again.

Nandi gave voice to attacks on Hindus in BangladeshSince the 2024 uprising, attacks on minorities have increased in Bangladesh. Violence erupted across the country during student-led protests.

Furthermore, as violence escalated in 2025 following the death of student leader Osman Hadi, attacks on Hindu minorities increased.

It started with Dipu Chandra Das, a garment factory worker, who was beaten and set on fire by a mob on charges of blasphemy at Bhaluka in Mymensingh. His death was widely condemned and the interim government led by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus said, “Such violence has no place in the new Bangladesh. The perpetrators of this heinous crime will not be spared.”

Another Hindu man, who owns a grocery store, has reportedly been killed after a sharp-edged attack in Narsingdi, on the outskirts of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Another Hindu businessman was murdered in Mymensingh on the eve of the national elections. The deceased, 62-year-old Susen Chandra Sarkar, was a rice trader. Sarkar was hacked to death in his shop.

Amid the surge, Nandi contested on a Jammat ticket, saying his contesting the election on a JMI ticket was proof that Bangladeshi Hindus would be safe.

Contesting for the constituency, Nandi wrote for Al Jazeera, and said his run in politics as a Hindu competing with Jammat showed that Bangladeshi Hindus were not in danger.

“My name is Krishna Nandi. I am a Hindu. I am a businessman. I am also a parliamentary candidate of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. This combination seems unusual to many readers. To me, it reflects a deeper truth about Bangladeshi politics that has long been hidden by fear, misinformation and political expediency,” he wrote earlier in Bangladesh.

“When Jamaat-e-Islami comes to power, no Hindu will have to leave Bangladesh. No Hindu will be forced to go to India. Instead, Hindus will live in this country with dignity, security and respect. When I say Hindus will be treated with respect, I am not talking symbolically. I am talking about concrete guarantees of security, justice and equal citizenship.”
