Karnataka BJP MLA Bairathi Basavaraj was arrested at the Kempegowda International Airport here on Thursday in a murder case soon after his arrival from Ahmedabad, police sources said.

Hours after the arrest of KR Puram MLA, the Supreme Court rejected a petition challenging the Karnataka High Court’s order denying him anticipatory bail in the history-sheet-changer murder.

The case relates to the murder of Shivaprakash alias Biklu Shibu (40), who was hacked to death on July 15, 2025, in the city’s Bharti Nagar.

During the investigation, the police began probing the alleged role of former minister Basavaraj, who has been named as the fifth accused in the FIR, in the crime.

According to the police, the assailants came in a car and killed Shivprakash in front of his mother.

Shivaprakash’s mother Vijayalakshmi said in her complaint that she saw eight to nine men “attacking” her son with iron rods and knives. When his friend tried to resist, they also hit him with an iron rod.

Investigators said the killings were sparked by a long-running property dispute dating back to February 2025, involving rival claimants over land in the Kithaganur area.
