A new bill has been introduced in the US Congress to end the H-1B visa program, an issue that has come up repeatedly since President Donald Trump won the 2024 election.
The deportation legislation bill, if passed, would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act by ending the H-1B visa program. (Reuters/Representative)The Ending Exploitative Imported Labor Exemptions Act or Deportation Act, introduced by Republican Representative Greg Steube from Florida, said the lawmaker said corporations have repeatedly abused the H1B visa system and imported cheap foreign labor into America.
The deportation legislation bill, if passed, would amend the Immigration and Nationality Act by ending the H-1B visa program.
“Prioritizing foreign labor over the well-being and prosperity of American citizens undermines our values and national interests,” Steube said in a statement.
“Our workers and youth continue to be displaced and torn apart by the H-1B visa program that rewards corporations and foreign competitors at the expense of our workforce. We cannot preserve the American Dream for our children by confiscating their share of it from non-citizens. That is why I am introducing deportation legislation to put working Americans first,” added the statement again.
What is deportation law?According to Greg Steube’s office, the deportation legislation would amend Section 214(g)(1)(A) of the Immigration and Nationality Act to completely end the H-1B visa program.
According to the bill, the number of H-1B visas would be reduced to zero starting in fiscal year 2027 and every year thereafter. This will effectively bring the program to a complete termination rather than phasing it out over time.
If the bill goes into effect, companies will no longer be able to submit applications for H-1B visas after the cap is removed.
Steub said the deportation law is essential, because more than 80 percent of H-1B recipients are Indian or Chinese nationals, employers who often prefer younger workers.
He also added that the deportation legislation would end the H-1B program that has disadvantaged American workers.
“Our workers and young people continue to be displaced and disenfranchised by the H-1B visa program that rewards corporations and foreign competitors at the expense of our workforce. We cannot preserve the American Dream for our children by confiscating their share from non-citizens,” the Republican said.
He also listed how the H-1B program put Americans at a disadvantage, noting how it prevented more than 10,000 US physicians from accessing residency programs while facilitating the influx of more than 5,000 foreign-born doctors.
What will the end of H1B visa program mean for Indians? The H-1B visa program is a pathway to the US for many Indian Americans to live the dream. Many of today’s tech leaders once held H-1B visas. Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO of Microsoft; Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and its parent company, Alphabet; Even a top Republican ally, Elon Musk, all came to the United States on the same program.
India was the largest beneficiary of the H-1B visa program in 2025. About 70 percent of the 730,000 H-1B visa holders are from India. In 2024, 71 percent of the 400,000 H-1B visas approved went to Indians. China was a distant second at less than 12 percent.
These statistics clearly show that Indians are a major beneficiary of the H-1B visa program and if the Deportation Act is passed, it will eliminate this procedure for Indians to enter the US.
