Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Wednesday called a mass shooting in the remote town of Tumbler Ridge “unspeakable cruelty” and declared the nation in mourning.

(AFP)The statement comes after a shooting at a high school in British Columbia’s Tumbler Ridge. Six people were found dead inside the school, with one dying on the way to hospital after the incident on Tuesday.

“These children and their teachers witnessed unspeakable cruelty. I want everyone to know this: our entire country stands with you, for all Canadians,” he said, speaking in French in parliament, AFP reported.

In addition to the eight fatalities, two more people were killed at a second site believed to be linked to the incident, bringing the total death toll to 10.

“What happened shocked our nation and left us all in mourning,” Carney added.

Earlier Tuesday, Carney expressed deep sadness after the shooting.

“My prayers and deepest condolences go out to the families and friends who have lost loved ones to this horrific violence,” the prime minister said in a statement at X.

The prime minister highlighted the nation’s strength in difficult times, saying, “Our country’s ability to come together in crisis is the best – our compassion, our unity and our compassion for each other.”

“Our officials are working closely with provincial counterparts to ensure the community receives the support it needs,” he added. In addition to Carney, several other Canadian leaders have condemned the violence in British Columbia.

The suspect is deadThe suspect in the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting has also died, from a self-inflicted wound, and 25 others are receiving treatment at local centres, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said.

In a statement, the RCMP said the Police-Initiated Public Alert (PIPA) issued earlier had been cancelled, as authorities did not believe any suspects remained or there was an ongoing danger to the public.

As part of the first response to an active shooting, police entered the school to identify the threat. During the search they found several victims. “A man believed to be the shooter was also found dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” the statement said.
