CORTINA D’AMPEZO, Italy — Lindsey Vonn underwent a “successful” third surgery on her broken left leg after her downhill crash at the Olympics, the American skier said Wednesday.

Lindsay Vonn says she has had a ‘successful’ third surgery on her broken leg after a crash at the OlympicsVonn posted an update on Instagram that included a photo of her giving a thumbs up sign in her hospital bed with her leg in a metal frame.

“I had my 3rd surgery today and it was successful. Success today has a completely different meaning than success a few days ago,” Vaughan said. “I’m making progress and while it’s slow, I know I’ll be OK.”

Vonn, 41, crashed 13 seconds into her run at Sunday’s Milan Cortina Games and was airlifted by helicopter. He said late Monday that he suffered a “complex tibia fracture that is currently stable but will require multiple surgeries to properly fix.”

Nine days before Sunday’s accident, Vonn tore the ACL in his left knee in another accident. Even before that, all eyes were on him as a feel-good story to headline the Games for his comeback after almost six years of retirement.

Vaughn’s father, Alan Kildow, told The Associated Press on Monday that he is “always” surrounded by family at the hospital in Treviso where he is being treated.

“Thank you to all the incredible medical staff, friends, family, who have been by my side and the beautiful outpouring of love and support from people around the world,” Vaughan added. “Also, huge congratulations to my teammates and the Team USA athletes who are out there motivating me and giving me something to cheer about.”

Vonn, who holds a record 12 World Cup wins in Cortina, returned to ski racing in December 2024 after undergoing a partial titanium replacement surgery on her right knee in April of that year.

He was the fastest racer entering the Olympics this season, winning two downhills and finishing on the podium in seven of the eight World Cup races. He came fourth in another.
