Imphal: Security forces on Wednesday arrested eight active cadres of various banned underground outfits involved in extortion and criminal activities from various locations, including two from near the India-Myanmar border, police said.

In another operation, Manipur Police arrested three cadres of banned underground outfit Kangleipak ​​Communist Party (Apunba) factions in Imphal East and Imphal West districts.

The second, Sadu Koireng, Chabungbam Taisan Meitei (21) of Imphal East – currently staying at Sajiwa Relief Camp – was arrested near Chairenthong Eko, police recovered an M20 pistol with a magazine and a mobile handset.

A third, Athokpam Derrick Singh (22) of Thangmeiband Hijam Leikai in Imphal West district, was arrested for his alleged involvement in the recent bomb blasts at Lalambung Takhellambam Leikai.

Officials said a joint operation was launched targeting those involved in extortion, arms smuggling and militancy in the valley and hill districts. “These operations will continue to ensure peace and stability in the state,” said a senior police officer, requesting anonymity.
