The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notice on a petition filed by Priya Kapoor, wife of late businessman Sanjay Kapoor, to initiate perjury proceedings against her mother-in-law Rani Kapoor for allegedly making false statements in her case regarding the Rani Kapoor family trust. This came a day after the court urged the family members to resolve their differences.

Late industrialist Sanjay Kapoor’s wife Priya Kapoor left the Patiala House Court in New Delhi on Wednesday. (PTI)Sanjay Kapoor, chairman of automotive component maker Sona Comstar, died of a heart attack while playing polo in London on June 12, 2025. He was earlier married to designer Nandita Mahtani and later to actor Karisma Kapoor, with whom he had two children — Samaira and Kian.

After their divorce in 2016, he married Priya in 2017 and they had a son Azarius. The Rani Kapoor Family Trust was formed under a trust deed dated October 26, 2017 and holds shares in Sona Comstar.

After Sanjay’s death, Samaira and Kian approached the High Court seeking a one-fifth share under their father’s will. Rani had also filed a suit in January to declare the trust “null” and “void”, alleging that her late son and daughter-in-law Priya, her husband, SK Kapoor, founder of Sona Comstar, had fraudulently set it up to deprive her of the properties illegally given to her.

On Tuesday, however, the court suggested that family members, including the Queen, resolve their differences through mediation in “peaceful ways”, describing the situation as “sad”. Justice Mini Pushkarna asked the parties to seek direction, observing that all have suffered grief and loss in different ways. The court emphasized on protecting family relations and moving forward.

On Wednesday, Justice Pushkarna asked Rani and 22 others — including her seven grandsons, Nitin Sharma and Dinesh Aggarwal, witnesses to the will that allegedly bequeathed Sanjay Kapoor’s entire estate to Priya — to respond to Priya’s plea.

The court also asked Priya to respond to Priya’s plea to dismiss Rani’s case as containing false statements.

Priya’s counsel, Akhil Sibal, pressed for the plea arguing that Rani had falsely claimed in her case that she had never signed or seen the RK Family Trust Deed and only received a copy in July and November 2025. He claimed that extensive documentary evidence contradicted these claims and was deliberately suppressed in court.

Sibal referred to a notarized affidavit dated March 19, 2024, in which Rani purportedly admitted being a trustee of the RK Family Trust, confirmed her participation in the meeting, verified her signature on the meeting minutes and confirmed the decisions taken in the meetings on February 9, 2018, 2018, and August 20 regarding various share transfers of the group. Trust companies.

However, Rani and her grandson, Naina Kapoor Koirala (Mandhira’s daughter), objected to the maintainability of the petitions, arguing that Priya had already filed a petition to dismiss Rani’s case.

The next hearing in this matter will be held on March 23.
