Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered February 5 in Tihar Jail After the Delhi High Court refused to grant him more time in the long-running check bounce case. The court refused to withdraw its earlier order directing him to surrender to the jail authorities.

What is the phenomenon of check bounce?D This is from 2010while Yadav borrowed ₹5 crore from M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to finance his management venture Ata Pata Lapata. The film did not perform well at the box office, resulting in financial losses.

Later a check bounce complaint was filed against him. In April 2018, a magisterial court convicted Yadav and sentenced him to six months in prison. A Sessions Court upheld the conviction in 2019.

Court observationsThe High Court had earlier stayed his conviction to June 2024 on the condition that he make sincere efforts to settle the dispute. However, the court noted repeated violations of the undertaking given by Yadav regarding repayment.

Expressing “strong dissent”, Justice Swarana Kant Sharma said the court cannot be expected to “create special circumstances” because a person belongs to a particular background or industry.

“The law rewards compliance, not contempt,” the court observed, adding that leniency cannot continue in the face of persistent non-compliance.

Yadav’s senior counsel made a “mercy plea” to withdraw the surrender order, saying the actor was arranging funds and was ready to surrender. ₹25 lakhs immediately. Counsel also submitted that both the parties have tentatively worked out a repayment schedule.

However, the court refused the relief, observing that Yadav had already been directed to surrender by 4 pm on February 4. Justice Sharma said that he will be heard only after the surrender order is complied with.

“This Court cannot be expected to show or create special circumstances for any person merely because such person belongs to a particular background or industry. Flexibility, though sometimes necessary, cannot be extended indefinitely, especially when it is met with continued non-compliance,” the court said.

The High Court recorded that Yadav had to pay Rs ₹1.35 crore in each of the seven cases. The complainant company was also directed to release the money deposited earlier with the Registrar General.

Two demand drafts have been mentioned by the court ₹75 lakh each was deposited in October 2025. Nevertheless, approx ₹9 crores remains outstanding.

After the court’s refusal to extend the deadline, Yadav surrendered in Tihar Jail later on February 5. The court clarified that he can make appropriate plea after surrender as per law.

What did Rajpal Yadav say?Rajpal made an emotional statement moments before surrendering to authorities. Dealing with the situation, he was quoted by News X as saying, “Sir, kya karun? Mere paas payes na hai. Or show no way… Sir, yahan hum sab akele hai. No friends. I have to face this crisis by myself. (Sir, I have no other option here. Alone.)”
