Canada school shooting: The incident happened at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia’s Peace Region, police confirmed.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his deep sorrow after the shooting at a high school in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. Six people were found dead inside the school, with one dying on the way to hospital after the incident on Tuesday.

“My prayers and deepest condolences go out to the families and friends who have lost loved ones to this horrific violence,” the prime minister said in a statement at X.

The prime minister highlighted the nation’s strength in difficult times, saying, “Our country’s ability to come together in crisis is the best – our compassion, our unity and our compassion for each other.”

The prime minister also spoke with Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangari, who is leading the federal response effort.

“Our officials are working closely with provincial counterparts to ensure the community receives the support it needs,” he added. In addition to Carney, several other Canadian leaders have condemned the violence in British Columbia.

British Columbia Premier David Eby called the violence “unimaginable.”

“The government will ensure all possible support for community members in the coming days, as we all try to come to terms with this unimaginable tragedy,” he wrote on X.

“We are devastated by the loss of life and the profound impact this tragedy has had on families, students, employees and our entire city,” said a statement issued by the municipality of Tumbler Ridge.

Meanwhile, federal opposition leader Pierre Poilivre called the shootings “economic violence”.

He added, “Our prayers are with the families, students, teachers, first responders and the entire community grieving this profound loss.”

An emergency text alert sent Tuesday afternoon described the suspect as a “female in a dress with brown hair.”

In a statement, the RCMP said the Police Initiated Public Alert (PIPA) issued earlier has been cancelled, as authorities do not believe any suspects remain or there is an ongoing danger to the public.

As part of the first response to an active shooting, police entered the school to identify the threat. During the search they found several victims. “A man believed to be the shooter was also found dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” the statement said.
