An Iranian court sentenced him Nobel Peace Prize Winner Narges Mohammadi to six years in prison, her lawyer said AFP Sunday (February 8, 2026).
“She has been sentenced to six years in prison for conspiring to commit a crime,” said lawyer Mostafa Nili, adding that she was also banned from leaving the country for two years.

Ms. Mohammadi was sentenced to one and a half years in prison for her campaign activities and will be exiled for two years to the city of Khosf in the eastern province of South Khorasan, the lawyer said.
Under Iranian law, the prison sentences run concurrently. Mr Nili expressed hope that Ms Mohammadi could be temporarily “released on bail to receive treatment” due to her health problems.
He added that the verdict given is not final and can be appealed.
Over the past quarter-century, Ms. Mohammadi, 53, has been repeatedly prosecuted and jailed for her vocal campaign against Iran’s death penalty and mandatory dress code for women.
Ms Mohammadi has spent most of the past decade behind bars and has not seen her twin children, who live in Paris, since 2015.
In December 2024, he was released for three weeks on medical grounds related to “his physical condition following the removal of the tumor and bone graft,” according to his lawyer.
Behind bars, the Nobel laureates were not silent, holding protests in the prison yard and going on hunger strike.
Ms Mohammadi won the Peace Prize in 2023, mainly for campaigning against the death penalty in Iran. His children collected the award on his behalf as he was in prison at the time.
Human rights groups, including Amnesty International, say Iran carries out more executions each year than any other country for which no reliable statistics are available, except for China.
