Morgan McSweeney has Keir Starmer’s chief of staff has quit Amidst outrage over his role in the appointment Peter Mandelson as US ambassador.

Here is his resignation statement in full:

“After careful consideration, I have decided to resign from the government.

“The decision to appoint Peter Mandelson A mistake was made. He has damaged our party, our country and the trust in politics itself. When asked, I advised the Prime Minister to make that appointment and I take full responsibility for that advice. Responsibility in public life should be owned not only when it is most convenient but also when it is most important. Under the circumstances, the honorable way is to step aside.

“This was not an easy decision. Much has been written and said about me over the years, but my motivations have always been simple: I have worked every day to elect and support a government that puts the lives of ordinary people first and leads to a better future for our great nation. labor The government does that.

“I regret the circumstances of my departure and leave with pride in what we have achieved. But I have always believed that there are times when you have to accept your responsibility and step away for a greater cause.

“As I leave I have two other reflections: First, and most importantly, we must remember the women and girls whose lives were ruined by Jeffrey Epstein and whose voices will not be heard for a long time. Second, although I did not oversee the due diligence and vetting process, I believe the process is now fundamentally safe.

“I will be in full support of the Prime Minister. He is working every day to rebuild trust, restore standards and serve the nation. I will continue to support that mission in whatever way I can. It has been the honor of my life to serve.”
