And they have the ability to be able to investigate it as a possible, viable scenario, or they can rule it out as a possible hoax. We’ve already found and arrested one.”
Giacalone was referring to the arrest of Derrick Calella, who admitted to sending a fake ransom request to Nancy’s family.

Giacalone also revealed what the motive might be if not money.
“We know that the three big things are love, money and drugs, right?” Dr. Giacalone. “Those are the three big motives that people do these things. But in a situation like this, you also have to consider a retribution factor, a cover-up factor, meaning the person found something in the family and now they’re trying to keep it a secret, that kind of thing.”
“Investigators gather and they sit there and they gather, so to speak, and they try to form their hypothesis. And listen, most people are victimized by someone they know, and that’s always the starting point. And then you let the evidence of the facts dictate to you what category it’s going to fall into,” he added.
