Namibian cheetah Asha gave birth to five cubs on Saturday Kuno National Park In Madhya Pradesh, Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav made the announcement, describing it as “great pride and joy”. Project Cheetah. The number of surviving cubs of Indian origin has reached 24 and the total cheetah population in the country now stands at 35, he said.

“A moment of immense pride and joy for Project Cheetah as Asha, the Namibian cheetah and a proud second-time mother, gave birth to five cubs on 7th February 2026 at Kuno National Park. With this, the number of surviving cubs of Indian origin stands at 24, marking the eighth Indian cheetah litter in a remarkably successful cheetah litter. The journey under the eco-conscious leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, adopted And cherished,” she wrote on X.

“This gratifying achievement stands as a shining testimony to the undying dedication, skill and commitment of the field workers and vets working tirelessly on the ground. May Asha and her cubs enrich, develop and sprint India’s cheetah story to greater success,” the minister added.

Asha was brought to India from Namibia with the aim of restoring the population of the world’s fastest land animal in the country, which became extinct decades ago.

MP CM reactsIn a post on X, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department said the milestone reflects the unremitting efforts of forest officials and vets.

“Kuno witnessed a moment of pure pride as Asha gave birth to five healthy cubs, strengthening India’s cheetah conservation journey. With this, the number of Indian-born cubs rose to 24, and the total cheetah population to 35,” Yadav wrote in X.

“The state is emerging as a hub for wildlife conservation,” Yadav added.
