Information Minister Ataullah Tarar said on Friday that the “detailed” medical report of Pakistan’s jailed former prime minister Imran Khan has been handed over to his family.
Imran Khan was arrested and jailed in August 2023 in multiple cases and is currently lodged in Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi. (AFP file)Tara said this in a social media post hours after the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) approached the Supreme Court seeking medical reports of the 73-year-old former cricketer-turned-politician and visitation rights for his personal doctor and family members, Dawn newspaper reported.
On 29 January, Tarar confirmed that Khan underwent a medical procedure for an eye condition at a hospital a week ago and is currently “well”.
Khan was taken from Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail to Islamabad’s Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), where he is serving his sentence after being convicted in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case.
In X’s post on Friday, the minister said that Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Mehmood Khan Achakzai wrote a letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif while PTI leaders also approached the apex court regarding Khan’s medical checkup.
“Based on instructions from the Prime Minister’s Office, a detailed report has been sent by the Executive Director of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital to the Superintendent of Central Prison, Rawalpindi (Adiala), which has been handed over to the family,” he said.
However, Khan’s sister Aleema told X that the SC chief justice had “promised last Friday that Imran Khan’s medical report will be provided to his family”.
“Today, when the Jail Superintendent was produced before the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC), only two brief notes were submitted,” he said.
“This behavior reflects complete contempt for the authority of the Chief Justice of the SC,” he said.
“We urge Chief Justice Yahya Afridi to issue a contempt notice to the jail authorities and ensure that Imran Khan’s medical report is handed over to his family without any further delay,” he asserted.
One of the documents attached to the post, a letter to the ATC from the superintendent of Adiala Jail, states that Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi are being “treated as per the Pakistan Prisons Rules 1978”.
Khan was arrested and jailed in August 2023 in multiple cases and is currently lodged in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail after being convicted in one of them.
Meanwhile, PIMS executive director Prof Dr Rana Imran Sikandar was quoted as saying that the former prime minister’s eye procedure went “smoothly” and he remains “stable”.
Achakzai wrote a letter to Prime Minister Sharif on Tuesday, seeking his “personal intervention” for the PTI founder’s medical examination by the jailed leader’s “trusted” doctors.
Earlier in the day, PTI’s barrister Gohar Ali Khan, expressing concern over Khan’s health, said the party had submitted a memorandum to the registrar seeking Khan’s access to his personal doctors, as well as his medical report.
