The bodies of two men and two women from Bengaluru were found hanging in a room at a dharamshala (rest house) in Bihar’s Rajgir town on Friday, police said. The bodies were recovered after the manager of Digambar Jain Dharamshala reported a foul smell coming from the room.

Police said they are investigating whether it was suicide or murder. (Shutterstock)Police said they are investigating whether it was suicide or murder. All four are believed to have been staying at the hospice since January 31.

The police, citing preliminary investigations, said the man is believed to have died four days ago. They also said that the exact cause of death is still unclear. The hospice staff had not seen the four since the room was last opened on Monday, police said.

Investigators were awaiting the autopsy report. They interrogate the in-charge of the hospice Mukesh Jain and other staff. The hospice has 55 rooms and most of them are occupied.

“Four men came to Dharamshala on January 31 saying they had returned from Rajgir in Nepal. One of them gave his Aadhaar card saying he was from Bengaluru. The others were without identity cards,” said Mukesh Jain. He said the police have contacted the families of the four.

Rajgir Sub-Divisional Police Officer Sunil Kumar Singh said details of the mobile calls, information of the people they came in contact with during their travels and CCTV footage are being verified. He also added that the police are investigating the case from all possible angles, such as suicide, financial dispute or any conspiracy.

Rajgir attracts thousands of tourists every day to Vishwashanti Stupa (Peace Pagoda), Ghora Katra Lake, Nowlakha Jain Temple and Nalanda University.
