Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered to Tihar Jail authorities on Thursday after a legal standoff in Delhi. This was after the Delhi High Court rejected the actor’s plea to extend the deadline for his surrender to Wednesday, February 4.

As the court upheld its order directing Rajpal Yadav to surrender to the jail authorities, it also said the court could not be expected to “create special circumstances” because of his background or industry.

A quick timeline:2018: A magisterial court convicted Rajpal Yadav and his wife in the check-bounce case in April that year, under Section 138 (dishonor of cheque) of the Negotiable Instruments Act. The couple were sentenced to six months in prison.

2019: A sessions court upheld the magisterial court’s verdict in January 2019. Later, Rajpal Yadav and his wife Radha filed a revision petition in the Delhi High Court, challenging the session court’s order.

2024: In June that year, the Delhi High Court suspended the six-month sentence given to the couple, noting that they were not hardened criminals. Since then, the moratorium has been extended from time to time.

2025: In December last year, Rajpal Yadav’s counsel had assured the court that the draft demand of the price ₹40 lakhs was ready and the remaining Rs ₹2.10 crore to be disbursed by January 19, 2026.

February 4, 2026: The Delhi High Court refused to grant any further extension to the jail surrender stay and directed Rajpal Yadav to report to the Jail Superintendent by 4 pm that day.

February 5, 2026: Sticking to its earlier stand, the Delhi High Court refused to withdraw the surrender directive and Justice Swarana Kant Sharma also observed that the actor’s failure to surrender the day before reflected little respect for the law.

Allegation against Rajpal Yadav’s wifeA company named M/s Murali Projects Private Limited was the complainant in the case against Rajpal Yadav and his wife. The company alleged that Yadav had taken the loan ₹2010 by promising to pay Rs 5 crore for the production of the film Ata Pata Lapata ₹8 crore, but failed to do so. As previously reported by HT.

The firm also said that the settlement amount was changed ₹7 crores were paid but seven checks bounced.

In its February 2 order, the Delhi High Court reportedly specified that Yadav should pay the money ₹1.35 crore in each of the seven cases against him. It also noted that despite the extension of his jail term, Rajpal Yadav has repeatedly broken his commitment to the court to pay the money to the complainant M/s Murali Projects Pvt.

According to the news agency PTItwo demand drafts ₹75 lakhs was deposited with the Registrar General in October 2025 and an amount of Rs ₹9 crore remains payable, the court noted in the order.
