Bhubaneswar:A 22-year-old man was arrested, and five minor boys were sent to the penitentiary for allegedly gang-raping a minor girl in Odisha’s Bolangir district in December last year, police said.

Police said that a team led by District Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhilash Ji is conducting a thorough investigation. (Representative photo)The girl’s family filed a police complaint on Tuesday after a video of the incident, recorded and posted online, went viral on social media. The police arrested six persons including the main suspect Sushant Sahu on the same day.

Inspector General (IG) Northern Range Himanshu Lal said the five minors, who were Class 9 classmates, were sent to a correctional facility in Rourkela after they were produced before the Juvenile Justice Board.

The girl went to attend evening tuition classes in the government school she studies in.

Sahu allegedly entered the classroom and persuaded the girl to accompany them as the teacher, along with the five minors, was absent. An official said, “The minor was then taken to a nearby isolated place where she was gang-raped.

“They recorded the act on their mobile phones and circulated the video on Instagram and Facebook, threatening the survivor against filing a police complaint,” the officer added.

Police said that a team led by District Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhilash Ji is conducting a thorough investigation.

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (BNS) and the Information Technology (IT) Act, the SP said.

“Though the crime took place in December, it was suppressed as the accused were threatening the girl. The investigation is now focused on identifying those responsible for filming and circulating the clip,” added the SP.
