Veteran actress Zeenat Aman decided to turn back the clock and reflect on the changes that have taken place in the projection of heroines in Hindi cinema in the short span of time between her two films, Dostana and Tisri Ankh.Zeenat Aman was watching some scenes from her old movies and something very interesting caught her attention. She noted, “A few weeks ago you watched me being teased and slut-shamed by Amitji’s character in a music video from Dostana, this week you can watch me being the aggressor against Dharmji’s character in Teesri Ankh! In her latest Instagram post, Zeenat revealed how things have changed so much in a short span of just two years.“Has everything really changed so radically for heroines in Hindi cinema in the two short years between the two films? It’s questionable, but I think this scene offers a nice gender twist on a familiar trope. Here, Ashok Dharmji is naive and imposed, and my Barkha is fraudulent and completely inappropriate! She aggressively pursues him, and he plays the role of the unwilling and irritated object of her desire.”The veteran actress also pointed out that the reason why one scene seems great and another is infuriating is because of the traditional role reversal.
“The truth is that I cannot approve of Barha’s approach any more than I could approve of Inspector Vijay’s approach! Jokes and pranks are great courtship tools, but I think our industry has sometimes taken that to the extreme.”Zeenat Aman shared that several of our films glorify obsession and silliness instead of portraying true and healthy love, which she also feels guilty of.“Now I admit that I played a role in spreading the silly idea of romance that Bollywood exported to Indians everywhere. So this is my two-pronged effort to solve this problem. Let me be clear: when it comes to relationships, consent is non-negotiable and respect must go both ways. Trust me, I learned this the hard way,” her post concluded.
