A truck overturned on a steep mountain road in the central Philippines and plunged into a ravine, killing nine workers, police said.

The workers were returning to their office after delivering crude oil and other supplies in an agricultural village in the city of Bayawan in Negros Oriental province when their truck overturned the road and plunged into a 30-meter (98-foot-) deep ravine, police said. It was loaded with five drums of crude oil.

The cause of the crash, which occurred shortly before noon in fine weather, was not immediately clear. Provincial Police Chief Colonel Timmer Alam said that the laborers died while being brought to the hospital.

The Philippines has a disturbing record of fatal road accidents, attributed to weak enforcement of traffic laws, reckless driving, erratic vehicles and inadequate road safety railings and signs.
