A 24-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his parents and sister in Vijayanagara district on Friday, police said on Saturday, after the bodies of the victims were exhumed the previous day.
The offenses are alleged to have been committed on January 27.The body was recovered in the presence of Harpanahalli Sub-Divisional Magistrate Suresh Kumar, added the police, adding that the victim’s viscera had been sent for forensic examination to determine the exact cause of death.
The deceased were identified as Bhimraj (48), mother Jayalakshmi (44) and Amaruta (17), police said, adding that accused Akshay Kumar confessed to the crime on Friday.
The matter came to light after Akshay approached the Tilaknagar police station on January 29 reporting his parents and sister missing.
Police said she told officials that her father was ill and the entire family had traveled from Kotturu to Bengaluru for treatment at Jayadeva Hospital on January 27, adding that they were carrying ₹4 lakh in cash to hand over to a relative, adding that his family sent him WhatsApp messages confirming his arrival at Jaydev Hospital and even shared pictures of the hospital premises and a nearby metro pillar.
However, she claimed that by evening that day, all their phones were switched off and the next day she received a call from an unknown number, where she said the hospital staff had taken her phone and asked her to come immediately. Akshay also told the police that he and his uncle searched the hospital extensively on January 29 but could not trace the family.
The Tilaknagar police registered a missing case and searched various hospitals during the night. When no leads were found, the officers became suspicious and detained Akshay for questioning. He broke down during interrogation on January 30 and confessed to the crime.
According to Vijayanagar SP M Janhvi, “Akshay first killed his mother with a knife inside the house. Then he called his sister home on the pretext of giving her a gift and killed her too. When his father came back and was watching television in the hall, Akshay allegedly attacked and killed her too.”
