BENGALURU, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Saturday said police have been ordered to investigate the “suicide” of Confidant Group chairperson CJ Roy, who allegedly shot himself dead in his office here while IT officials were present in the earlier investigation.

Realtor ‘suicide’: K’taka HM orders police to investigate circumstances leading to incidentSpeaking to reporters, Parameshwara said the Income Tax department had earlier conducted an inquiry into Roy’s company and was in the process of completing the statutory procedures.

“His company was raided in December. There is a rule to file chargesheets in court within 60 days. They have to be finalized before February 4. So he was summoned,” he said.

Roy had recently returned from abroad and was cooperating with the authorities, he added.

“Three days ago, he returned from Dubai. IT officials went to his office to record his statement. He also responded to it,” Parameshwara said.

“Meanwhile, Roy told the officials that he would be back in five minutes but after 20 minutes he did not return. It was then that he committed suicide.”

Parameshwar said that he has ordered an investigation into the incident.

“I have directed the police officials to investigate the incident due to the circumstances. The matter will be clear only after the report comes in,” he said.

He added that Roy’s family linked the incident to IT action. “Ray’s brother also gave a statement that the incident was due to an IT raid. Our police officials did not look at it from that angle,” he said.

Asked if there was a political angle to the rising income tax drive, HM declined to speculate.

He said, as the Home Minister, I will not say anything more.

Clarifying the scope of the investigation, Parameshwara said, “The police will only investigate the suicide case. If anything else comes out, that too will be investigated.”

Real estate tycoon Roy, who was in his late 50s, was injured by a bullet from a licensed firearm in his office near Richmond Circle in the city.

Staff members rushed to his room shortly after hearing the gunshots and found him lying in a pool of blood. He was immediately taken to the hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.

According to information technology sources, the search was started at Roy’s house about two months ago.

Roy’s brother alleged that he took this extreme step under the pressure of the central agency.

Roy is originally from Kerala.
