A vigilance court in Kozhikode sentenced a civil police officer to four years of hard labor and a fine. ₹50,000 for taking a bribe by threatening to file charges against a woman.
In a bribery case, a civil police officer was sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment. The accused, Baiju M, a resident of Ramanattukara, was previously a civil police officer at the Thenhipalam police station in the Malappuram district. He is currently a grade senior civil police officer at the Bhadanpalli police station in the Thrissur district.
The prosecution claims that in 2017, the complainant was charged with document forgery at the Thenhipalam police station.
According to Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau officials, Baiju was managing the case files while he was employed at the station as a civil police officer.
When the complainant appeared at the police station for formal signing after getting bail, Baiju threatened to implicate the complainant’s wife in the case and demanded bribe. ₹5,000 to prevent future action, according to the VACB.
After collecting ₹2,000 with force, he threatened the complainant over the phone and demanded the remaining sum.
The complainant went to the VACB because of this. A case was later filed after Baiju was apprehended by the Vigilance Northern Range team while accepting the remaining ₹3,000 bribe.
Judge Shibu Thomas of the Kozhikode Vigilance Court found Baiju guilty on Friday under two sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act following the conclusion of the investigation and trial.
According to section 7 of the Act, the accused was fined ₹25,000 and sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment.
In accordance with Section 13 of the Act, he was also fined ₹25,000 and given a four-year rigorous prison sentence.
The court mandated that both sentences be carried out concurrently.
